IMPORTANT NOTICE: VIRTUAL CLASS ON FRIDAY, NOV. 7

Please note the following change to next week's schedule. Because the two sections that meet on Tuesday are canceled for Election Day, I have decided to cancel the regularly scheduled class on Friday and hold a virtual class instead. This class is open to both T-Th and W-F sections.

The virtual class will be held from 1:00-4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. I will be at home at my desk during this time to answer any questions, to read and comment on brief passages from your white papers, or to check your citations. If you would like to contact me, email me at brownai@rowan.edu. If you would prefer to speak with me by phone, let me know and I will email my phone number to you. If I am unable to take your call immediately because I am working with another student, leave a contact number and I will call you back as soon as possible.

I will also be checking my email frequently between Friday and our next class, so please email me if you have questions about anything.

White Paper Proposal

Due Oct. 16/17

--Please submit a short write-up of your proposed project and be prepared to discuss it in class.

Compiling a Bug List

Due Oct. 14/15

--This exercise will help you get started on the white paper, which is a research project that defines a problem and proposes a technology solution.  The topic for this assignment must be a local problem.  A local problem is one that you observe in your everyday surroundings involving products you use, technologies you encounter, and your own engineering interests.  To get started on this assignment, compile a "bug list."  A bug list is a tool used by inventors and designers.  It is simply a list of problems you observe that ought to be solved.  Compile a list of at least ten such problems that could potentially serve as topics.  You can include problems you encounter at school, at home, at work, or in spaces you travel through in between.  For each topic, jot down notes explaining why it is a problem, what the nature of the problem appears to be, and what kind of solution would address it.  Keep in mind that we are interested in problems that demand engineering solutions (as opposed to solutions that are strictly economic, social, behavioral, etc.).

Due Oct. 9/10

Print and read the assignment instructions for the Academic White Paper. Bring a copy to class.
