Once engineers begin to view the many forms of communication used in the field as writing, they can become more appreciative of the art of writing. When we as engineers assume that the methods of communication we are using are not writing, we lose our ability to treat them as writing. Treating all forms of communication as writing can help engineers a great deal by leading them to hold all forms of communication to the same standards that writing is subject to, such the requirement for clear and accurate presentation.

Making an evidence presentation is a moral act as well

as an intellectual activity. To maintain standards of quality, relevence, and integrity for evidence, consumers of presentations should insist that presenters be held intellectually and ethically responsible for what they show and tell. Thus, consuming a presentation is also an intellectual and moral activity.

Course Schedule

Homework Assignments

Course Readings

We will have readings that complement, inform, and challenge the topics of the design and writing projects we will be completing this semester. Consult the course schedule for when readings and responses are due. Respones to (in Blackboard) and in-class discussions of the essays will comprise the grade you receive for the 10% Individual Portion of your final course grade. Responses to readings will be assessed out of a total of 10 points each. I will be looking for the quality of the response and the quantity that has been written. To achieve a 10 on a response, you must go above and beyond what is expected in both quality and quantity.

Contacting Each Other

There will be times during the semester when I will need to contact the class and you will need to contact me. I will contact you via your Rowan email account, so please be sure that you are checking it regularly and/or forwarding it to the email service you use most regularly. If you do not know your Rowan email address, you can find it at http://www.rowan.edu/toolbox/ email/#students.

I am in my office only during office hours and the brief times before and after class. As a result, calling me in my office will not get you an immediate response. I strongly suggest you contact me via email, which I check all day long.

Email, however, tends to be seen as an informal medium. This, however, should not always be the case. All emails that I send to you will have a meaningful subject line and a proper salutation (“Hi Class,” or “Hi Jane,” etc.). The first sentence will notify you of the purpose of the email, and then will get to the heart of the matter. It will end with a formal closing (“Thanks, BW”). I expect the same from any email you send. Any email that does not will immediately be deleted and not responded to.
